Abbey Vocational School, Donegal and Donegal South-West will clash in round 2 of the MacRory Cup this Friday night with the game fixed under lights in Ardara (7.45 throw-in).

The two sides have been drawn in the same group this year, after a very good run in the competition in 2024 when Abbey VS and Donegal South-West clashed in the semi-final, which was played in Fr Tierney Park, Ballyshannon.

Abbey VS prevailed in that game - 0-12 to 0-10 - to reach the Mac Rory final on their competition debut. The Donegal Town school lost out to St Pat’s, Maghera in Omagh in the decider.

This year the schools have had mixed fortunes in their opening game. Abbey VS had a resounding victory over St Michael’s of Enniskillen in their opening game in Tirconaill Park while Donegal South-West lost out to Our Lady’s Castleblayney last week in a game played in Loughmacrory in Tyrone.

Abbey VS will go into Friday night’s crunch tie as strong favourites, especially as it looks as if Donegal South-West will again be without their captain, Alex Cunnea of Coláiste na Carraige. Cunnea limped off the field in the second half of Naomh Columba’s defeat in the Ulster Intermediate championship on Saturday to Carrickmacross in Inniskeen and is very unlikely to have recovered in time.

Many of the players involved are also playing with their clubs in the Donegal U-21 championships, which are also in full swing, with the quarter-finals in the A competition on Saturday and Sunday.
