We must bring this success to senior level - Four Masters man of the match Seanán Carr

Seanán Carr celebrates a score for Four Masters Pic Matthew Harvey

The older of the three Carr brothers on the Four Masters team picked up the man of the match award on Sunday as the club added back-to-back U-21A titles with a big win over rivals Naomh Conaill in Fr Tierney Park, Ballyshannon.

Between them, the Carrs accounted for 0-12 of the Four Masters’ total with Seanán getting five points. While he was surprised by the quick Naomh Conaill start to the game with a goal and a point, he never felt under any pressure as he knew his side would come back and get scores.

"We knew Naomh Conaill were going to bring a lot to the game and the first few minutes we found ourselves four points down. Obviously it took us by surprise how quickly that goal came. We fought back well and in the second half we just pulled away. We kept the ball well and we were clinical too.

“We had no choice but to just settle. We knew we were going to find our rhythm but it did take that while. No, I don't think there were any nerves when the goal went in. We knew what we were going to do; we knew we had to get back into the game. We all trusted each other and we knew we were going to find them scores.

"We got the goal back then not long after and we were chipping away at the points. We found ourselves six points up at half-time and with the breeze in the second half we knew we had to play smart and keep the ball and be clinical. And that's exactly what we did.”

Naomh Conaill did get a few points in the second half with Shea Malone also getting a two point free but Carr wasn’t overly worried at any time.

"Like every team, they were always going to get a purple patch, and it was just about managing that purple patch but we came back well after that, settled the game down and took our scores when we needed to take them and pulled away at the end.”

The final score on the Four Masters side of the scoreboard was a whopping 2-22 and the Carrs certainly played their part, and Seanán quipped that their father, Shane, would be happy with that.

"It just happened to be us at the end of them scores and to be fair to the two boys, they took their scores well. Yeah, we shared a good chunk of that scoreline today so I'd say the 'oul boy will be happy with us.”

He also had a message for his side that winning at U-21 level should not be enough and they now needed to push on.

“Success has been great at underage now but it is just so important that we keep driving it on and bring it into the senior level.”
