Declan Bonner addresses his Fermanagh side prior to throw-in
Declan Bonner’s Fermanagh side got their 2026 campaign up and running in impressive fashion with a hard-earned 1-12 to 1-10 McKenna Cup victory over Cavan at Tempo on Wednesday evening.
The opening exchanges were lively, with Cain O’Brien and Garvan Jones registering early scores for the hosts, matched at the other end by Cormac O’Reilly. Cavan struck the game’s first major on 13 minutes when Caoimhin McGovern finished clinically to the net.
Fermanagh responded well, as O’Brien added two more points and Jones chipped in again to keep the contest finely balanced. A crucial Paddy Lynch two-pointer edged the Erne men in front, and they went to the break holding a narrow 1-7 to 0-7 advantage.
The hosts came out with renewed purpose after the restart and quickly turned the game on its head. Stephen McGullion raised a green flag early in the second half, with Declan McCusker following up with a point to strengthen Fermanagh’s grip.
Cavan briefly regained the lead thanks to a Ryan Donohoe score, but Fermanagh finished the stronger. Late contributions from McCusker, a two-pointer from McGurn, and a final score from Jones sealed a deserved opening-round win for Bonner’s side.
