Kieran Gallagher and, right, Karl Gallagher of Donegal and Monaghan
First cousins Kieran and Karl Gallagher might well have taken plenty of lumps out of each other in the back garden growing up but the stakes will be much higher on Saturday evening at Healy Park, Omagh.
Kieran has joined up with Jim McGuinness’ Donegal squad for 2026 and has started both their previous two outings in the pre-season competition, where wins were secured over Antrim and Derry.

Kieran’s dad is, of course, 1992 All-Ireland winner Michael Gallagher or, as he was known back then, ‘Big G’.
Michael’s brother Shaun would join An Garda Síochána and eventually be based out of Emyvale, in Monaghan.
And Shaun’s son Karl has lined out for the Farney side at midfield in their last two outings also, against Cavan and Tyrone respectively, so it seems like a direct coming together is inevitable at the weekend.
Indeed, Karl was named ‘Player of the Match’ against the Breffni County on the opening night. So silverware, as well as the Gallagher family bragging rights it seems, will both be on the line on Saturday evening.
