This was the typically candid post- match assessment from Donegal boss Mickey McCann as he struggled to come to terms with how his team lost a five-point lead in added time as Wicklow won by 3-16 to 2-18.

This was a vastly improved Donegal side, who brought the fight to Wicklow from the off at Echelon Park, Aughrim.

And it looked like Liam McKinney had led them to victory before Seanie Germaine’s two late goals, which won the day for the Garden County.

But McCann was not happy with a few decisions that went against Donegal in the dying minutes.

“There were a few decisions that went against us towards the end, and of course, you can’t say anything against referees.

“But if you look at the video, there was a push in the back on a Donegal player, and they got a free shortly afterwards, and they scored from it.

“We are just scunnered to lose it like that, being five points up going down the stretch, and then they got two scrambled goals to win it.

“It was a lottery.

“I think we were the better team out there today, but we switched off for a time in the first half and also at the end.

“We used the subs, and when you put everything into it and still lose it's heartbreaking.”

Better news for McCann is that Gerry Gilmore will be available for the game in Letterkenny in a fortnight.

“Gerry will be there for us, but Conor Gartland will be out for some time.”

But he said he was very proud of the team.

“They gave it everything, but I would love to see the free count in this game.

“When we brought physicality, we were punished very much for it, and our man was pushed in the back just before the end. If you got that free, it would have been a three- point game.”

“Consistency is important.

“We don’t fear this Wicklow team at all, as I believe that we can be better than them.

“But we were robbed at the end, and we have only ourselves to blame, as we should be able to see those moments out.”
