Speaking on Ocean FM at the weekend, 1992 legend Martin McHugh was explaining that the news on Donegal’s injured players was positive and that they were expected to all take part in the week-long warm-weather training camp in Portugal. What a boost that will provide to have the likes of Oisin Gallen, Ciaran Moore, Daire Ó Baoill and Shaun Patton back on the field. The month-long lead-in to Down in Letterkenny is a perfect buffer for those same lads to sharpen themselves and get up to speed with the rest of the group. And it also gives Jim McGuinness some real selection headaches. He has a huge decision to make now regarding his Number 1 jersey. Gavin Mulreany has improved so much over the course of the league, growing in confidence with each round. But out of sight is out of mind and it’s easy to forget just how good and unique Patton is when it comes to what he offers. Ciaran Thompson, we’re told, is back running in straight lines but ACL injuries can’t be rushed so if Donegal do see the Naomh Conaill man at some stage in championship, that will just be an added bonus.
