Tanya Kennedy has joined Sydney Swans in the AFLW ahead of the upcoming 2023 season.
The Castlefin native, who is based in Australia on and off since 2012, was an All-Star nominee last year having helped Donegal to the semi-finals of the LGFA TG4 Senior Championship and the final of the Lidl Ladies NFL.
Thirty-year-old Kennedy made a dash home this season to help Maxi Curran’s side to an Ulster title, with victory over Armagh in Owenbeg. The news was announced on the official Sydney Swans website.
“After playing with Gaelic football club Clanna Gael Sydney, Kennedy tried her hand at Aussie rules, joining the Inner West Magpies for a season,” they said. “It wasn’t long before she excelled in the sport, and joined the Sydney Swans as a train-on player for season 8.”
“I am so excited to have been given this opportunity, and I’m going to take it with both hands,” Kennedy said. “My very first AFL match was a Swans game at the SCG, and I immediately fell in love with this club. Never did I think I would be playing for them though, it’s surreal.”
