The position of Children's Officer on the Donegal GAA Executive is now a two person race after two of the nominees withdrew from the contest this week.
Filling the position has proven to be more difficult than normal this year. The outgoing officer, former chairman, Mick McGrath, Aodh Ruadh, was put forward by the Donegal Executive for ratification by Co. Committee last month, but the Co Committee meeting wanted to add three more names.
These were Michael McMenamin, Naomh Padraig, Uisce Chaoin; Gary Duffy, Buncrana and Emelyn Hughes, Four Masters.
After a lengthy debate it was decided that a three-person committee from outside Donegal would be put in place to select one name from the four nominees.
This led to another meeting behind held on Tuesday night of this week when the three-person committee was ratified. However, at the meeting it was revealed that Michael McMenamin and Gary Duffy had withdrawn from the contest, which left just names left, Mick McGrath and Emelyn Hughes.
The three person committee who will decide the issue include one each from Ulster (Oliver Galligan), Connacht (Michelle Glackin) and Leinster (Gearoid O Muilvihill). The two remaining candidates will now have to make a submission to the committee.
It is expected that another Co Committee meeting will be needed to ratify the selected candidate prior to annual Convention.
