Donegal GAA Co Secretary Declan Martin
The membership and registration in GAA Clubs in Donegal has fallen again in 2023 according to the report of secretary, Declan Martin, to the Donegal GAA Convention which takes place in Jackson's Hotel, Ballybofey on Wednesday next, 13 December.
In a wide ranging report covering all aspects of the GAA in the county over the last year, the secretary makes an observation on the membership.
"As you can see from the Registration report at the end of the convention booklet which carries the adult registration for a 5 (five year period),we have continually reduced our adult membership from 11,523 in 2019 to 8,573 this year. Not sure what the reason for this is as bear in mind that it is now a requirement that all adult players must also be full members for insurance purpose," says the secretary in his report.
"In years gone back that was not the case. Players did not have to be registered full members they did have to be registered for playing purposes only. I can only assume that we may have been working with inflated membership numbers in previous years and we might now have a more accurate membership list."
