For Gaoth Dobhair manager Ronan MacNiallais, Sunday’s 1-5 to 0-5 Division 1 win over Sean MacCumhaills at a wind-swept Magheragallon was all down to hard work and patience.

Not only had MacNiallais and his young team to contend with a fired-up Sean MacCumhaills, they also had to battle against the elements that battered the west coast at the weekend.

“That is as bad a day as I have seen here in Magheragallon for a long time, wind-wise,” said MacNiallais at the final whistle.

“Today was all about boys digging in and boys working hard. We know we have brilliant footballers but the modern game is all about working hard and putting in that bit of extra effort.

“It really was a game of two halves. The first half, against the wind, we had to work hard defensively and then, in the second half, it was all about the forwards working hard on getting turnovers up the pitch.

“We got a few turnovers and we got a few important scores off them. Early on, it was all about being patient and holding possession.

“It was not pretty to watch and it’s difficult because a wrong solo or a wrong hand pass and, all of a sudden, you are turned over and maybe caught out at the back.

“But given the wind, there is no other way of playing it because if you invite the opposition onto you, you are going to be punished”.

Gaoth Dobhair’s first half goal, tucked away by Cathal Gillespie four minutes from half-time, turned out to be the game’s decisive score.

“The goal was a massive score and well taken. The goalkeeper was out and Eoin De Burca and Cathal combined well before Cathal finished it to the net.”

The locals had an early let-off in the second half when Joel Bradley Walsh drove over Daithi Roberts’ crossbar from the penalty spot.

The kick was awarded when Chad McSorley was fouled as he bore down on the Gaoth Dobhair posts.

“It was a definite let-off,” agreed MacNiallais. “If they had scored it would have put them ahead and once you are ahead on a day like that you are holding all the aces. Lucky for us it went over the bar and not under it. “
