As they headed for Castlebar, records were the last thing on their minds. Having lost out in their previous outing in All-Ireland SFC Group 3 on a 3-9 to 0-16 scoreline against Cork, Jim McGuinness’s side were playing catch-up.
Donegal hoped for a Tyrone victory over the Leesiders in Tullamore and then needed to outscore whatever margin the Red Hands managed by three points against Clare. That would mean Donegal, Tyrone and Cork would finish the group fixtures all on four points, but Donegal would have the superior score difference.Donegal had little trouble and posted 2-23 to 0-5 win over Clare.
Meanwhile, Tyrone overcame a 0-10 to 0-9 deficit to beat Cork on a 1-18 to 0-17 scoreline and it all means automatic progression to the All-Ireland SFC quarter-finals for Donegal. Tyrone will have a home preliminary quarter-final and Cork are at the same stage, although will have to go on the road to play a second-placed finisher from another group.
