July 7, 1974
Ulster SFC semi-final
Sunday, July 7, saw West Germany defeat Holland to win the 1974 World Cup in Munich but in Clones, Donegal reached a second Ulster SFC in three seasons, having first lifted the Angle Celt Cup in 1972.
Antrim “were strongly fancied to win this one” but Donegal, despite kicking 12 wides in both the first and second halves, strolled through. Seamus Bonner scored a hat-trick of goals in the first half for a 3-4 to 1-2 interval lead and in the second half substitute Paul McGettigan netted before he had given his name to the referee, having been introduced, and Bonner added his fourth of the day. After a 1-14 to 2-11 draw against Down, Donegal won the replay 3-9 to 0-12 to win Ulster, only to lose to Galway 3-13 to 1-14 in the All-Ireland semi-final.
