Former Donegal player Karl Lacey
Former Donegal player Karl Lacey is now a strong candidate to take over as the new manager of the Derry senior football team.
Derry has been on the lookout for a replacement since Mickey Harte's departure in July, after guiding the team to a National League Division 1 title during his only season in charge.
Lacey, a four-time All-Star, would be a significant addition for a Derry squad that broke a 24-year drought to win the Ulster Championship under Rory Gallagher in 2022 and successfully defended the title in 2023.

As a key player for Donegal, Lacey was instrumental in their 2012 All-Ireland victory and was honored as Footballer of the Year that same season. He currently manages Kilcoo, steering them into tomorrow's county final against Burren in Newry, having led them to an 11th title in 12 years last season in his debut year as manager.
When questioned about the current vacancy, Derry county chairman John Keenan said on Friday that the county is "following a process" and will make an announcement once that process is finished.
Lacey has chosen not to comment on the matter.
