2014: More Ulster success and another All-Ireland final
By this stage, Murphy and Donegal were one of the teams dining at the top table, and after a poor 2013 season, they were back with a vengeance to put all right.
Winning a third Ulster crown in four years was the first step, with solid performances along the way against Derry, Antrim, and Monaghan. But it was in the All-Ireland semi-final when everyone’s head turned to what McGuinness and his side were doing when Donegal caused a huge shock in beating Dublin by 3-14 to 0-17 at Croker.
The Dubs were red-hot favourites but Donegal exposed them in fantastic fashion and Murphy was integral to their strategy, especially his flick-ons from Paul Durcan’s kick-outs to the running Donegal attackers which caused havoc for the Dubs.
The final was a disappointing affair but by that stage the team had brought the county to a place they could only dream of prior to 2010 with Murphy landing his second All-Star.
