Gaoth Dobhair received the prestigious Fondúireacht Sheosaimh Mhic Dhonncha Gold Medal, making them the sole Ulster club to secure this top accolade
Five GAA clubs from County Donegal have been recognised for their outstanding efforts in promoting the Irish language.
These clubs were among 70 honoured during the Fondúireacht Sheosaimh Mhic Dhonncha awards ceremony, held last night at Croke Park.
Gaoth Dobhair received the prestigious Fondúireacht Sheosaimh Mhic Dhonncha Gold Medal, making them the sole Ulster club to secure this top accolade for their dedication to integrating the Irish language within their club and community.
Three other Donegal clubs – Cill Chartha CLG, Cloich Cheann Fhaola CLG, and Gaeil Fhánada – were awarded silver medals, while Gleann tSúilí CLG earned a bronze for their efforts in fostering the language.
Speaking about the Fondúireacht Sheosaimh Mhic Dhonncha initiative, GAA President Jarlath Burns said:
“The Irish language is at the heart of the Gaelic Athletic Association, and the Fondúireacht is a wonderful scheme for promoting the language. It gives me great pleasure to see that this scheme is going from strength to strength, year after year. I would like to thank our partners, Glór na nGael, who work very hard to deliver this scheme each year.
“I would like to congratulate all the teams that have been awarded Fondúireacht Sheosaimh Mhic Dhonncha medals, especially those teams who have been awarded Gold. You have achieved something extraordinary.”
Representatives from the Ulster clubs attended the event at Croke Park to accept their awards, reflecting their commitment to preserving and promoting the Irish language within their communities.
The Fondúireacht Sheosaimh Mhic Dhonncha initiative is a joint effort between Glór na nGael and the GAA, aimed at increasing the use of the Irish language across GAA clubs nationwide. The medals celebrate the clubs’ continuous work to embed the language into their activities and inspire its growth among members and the wider community.
This annual ceremony not only highlights the achievements of individual clubs but also underscores the vital role that sport plays in sustaining and promoting the Irish language.
