Cloughaneely's win at St Michael's has eased their relegation worries

Cloughaneely bounced back from Friday night’s heavy defeat to Naomh Conaill with a win over St Michael’s at the Bridge.

St Michael’s 1-10
Cloughaneely 1-11

With the win Cloughaneely got their survival bid in Division One back on track. They now move ahead of Termon, Ardara, Glenswilly and Killybegs in the league standings with two games left to play.

Blake McGarvey, Shaun Curran and Lee O’Brien kicked the Cloughaneely points while Carlos O'Reilly, Michael Langan and Odhran McFadden posted the points for the locals.

Langan did score two points, both placed balls with one of them from the 45-metre line. The half-time score was Cloughaneely 0-6 St Michael’s 0-5.

Martin McElhinney of St Michael’s and Cloughaneely’s Blake McGarvey and Lee O’Brien kicked quickfire points on the resumption points as Cloughaneely stretched out to a two-point advantage.

But the visitors found themselves behind for the first time in over 30 minutes when Bryan Creed got on the end of a good move to steer the ball to the back of the Cloughaneely net for the game’s opening goal.

That was four minutes into the second half and thanks to points from O’Reilly and Creed the locals had pulled three clear 1-8 to 0-8 by the 40-minute mark.

St Michael’s were still three clear approaching the 50th before Jason McGee contered from  40 metres. And they never say die Cloughaneely were back in front three minutes later when Ciaran Gallagher sent substitute Paul Sweeney through for a goal and a 1-10 to 1-9 advantage.

The play was frenetic in the closing minutes  Langan levelled again from a close in free before man of the match Shaun Curran landed a huge point from way out on the left hand side.

And Curran, who kicked two points in the first half, also denied St Michael’s a late point when he got a block in on Colin McFadden who was in a good scoring position.
