Rory Kavanagh’s side also finished on top of the pile of the 16 competing teams and will face off with St Michael’s in the quarter-finals following their win in Ballybofey. On the other hand, after picking up three points from their opening two fixtures against St Michael’s and Four Masters, MacCumhaill’s season with the reversal against St Eunan’s following on from defeat at Gaoth Dobhair.
Eoin McGeehin was in fine form for the reigning county champions, with a personal haul of 1-4 to see his team over the line, with his goal in the 25th minute giving the away team a lead of 1-4 to 0-2.
Ronan McMenamin opened the scoring for the hosts, although St Eunan’s hit back with points from Ciaran Moore and a brace from Conor O’Donnell jnr. Joel Bradley Walsh pulled one back with an excellent long-range free before McGeehin tucked home the only goal of the game, shooting past Eoin Gallen following a brilliant fetch from Padraig McGettigan.
Bradley Walsh and McGeehin swapped scores at either end and by the break St Eunan’s were four points in front. St Eunan’s Conor O’Donnell snr hit two second half points as they kept MacCumhaill’s - who needed something from the match to have a chance of making the last eight - at arm’s length. Karl Dunnion had a chance of a goal in the third quarter only to see his shot go wide of Shaun Patton’s goal.
Shane O’Donnell also got on the scoresheet, as did substitute Peter McEniff later on, while Oisin Gallen scored all three of the MacCumhaill’s second half points.
