The Donegal SFC and IFC will run at their intended schedule following last night’s discussion of the matter at County Committee in Ballybofey.
Donegal manager Jim McGuinness had initially wanted “one or two” rounds of the club championship to be played between the conclusion of the Allianz League and start of the Ulster championship - with the remainder to be played after Donegal have concluded the All-Ireland series.
The decision, however, was made last September following a fixtures forum to postpone the start of the championships entirely until after Donegal had concluded their Ulster and All-Ireland championship campaigns.
That course of action was unanimously approved at Wednesday night’s meeting, meaning the status quo will be retained. A brief statement from the county board read: “County Committee tonight reaffirmed the decision taken at the fixtures forum in September 2013.”
Every county’s CCC must provide their respective provincial council with their fixture schedules for the year by March 31.
The All-County Football League starts this weekend and the second weekend, March 29/30, will be a free one as Donegal take on Louth in the Allianz League Division Two in Ballyshannon.
Then, the first weekend in April shall by a star weekend - when clubs play without their county players - with the All-County Football League fixtures taking place on Saturday, April 5, before Donegal face Armagh at the Athletic Grounds the following day.
The CCC are permitted to schedule four star series games over the season.
Donegal’s senior footballers and undertaking a pre-championship training week in the Algarve, Portugal, from Thursday, April 10 for seven nights.
There will be no club fixtures that weekend, April 12/13, but Easter weekend will house a double round of fixtures. The Allianz League finals take place on Sunday, April 27, should Donegal seal a top-two berth in Division Two.
Fixtures will continue right throughout the month of May, with the next break expected to take place when Donegal open their Ulster Championship with a quarter-final clash against Derry on Sunday, May 25, at Celtic Park.
All in all, those at Wednesday’s meeting learned that 14 rounds of the All-County Football League will be completed by late July.
