Aontú candidate Mary T Sweeney has been eliminated on the eleventh count in the Donegal constituency.

Sweeney's team sought a recount but, as things stand, the 12th count - which involves the distribution of Sweeney's votes - is proceeding amid an air of confusion.

The Letterkenny woman polled 2,469 first preferences when the ballots were counted on Saturday.

Sweeney stayed in the race for a Dáil seat until around 6.30pm on Sunday when she was eliminated, transfers having taken her tally to 3,376.

Sweeney did benefit from 493 transfers from Niall McConnell after his elimination on the 10th count.

When Kim McMenamin was eliminated on the eighth count, Sweeney gained 123 transfers.
