Donegal Airport will be featured in a documentary watched by over 10 million viewers in Japan.

The airport, set against the scenic backdrop of Carrickfinn, received a welcome visit this week from Cayenne Inc, a Japanese television production company. They are behind the documentary series A Comprehensive Guide to the World’s Most Fascinating Airports.

The programme focuses exclusively on unique airports around the world. It is broadcast on NHK, Japan’s national public broadcaster, and attracts an audience of over 10 million viewers.

Eimear Walsh, Digital Marketing Coordinator at Donegal Airport, said: “We were delighted to welcome Yoko and her colleagues Hiroaki, Masahide and Kazuyuki to Donegal Airport on Sunday, arriving on the afternoon flight. During their visit, they met airport staff, stayed locally in an Airbnb, and explored a wide range of locations across Donegal, including a trip to Sliabh Liag.

“While in Donegal, the crew experienced many aspects of local culture. They attended a traditional music session in Bonner’s Bar with musicians from Meenacross Comhaltas, learned about St Brigid’s Cross, visited Naomh Muire GAA club to learn about the sport, explored local history and folklore, and dined in Caisleán Óir, where they particularly enjoyed the seafood.”

Speaking about their visit, Yoko said: “We had such a wonderful experience, and the most impressive thing was the people. People make this airport. They are so warm and heartfelt, and they welcomed us like members of their family. Thank you so much to all the people of Donegal, from the bottom of our hearts.”

The crew returned to Tokyo yesterday. The programme is expected to air in Japan in May.
