Cow destroyed after consuming aluminium can discarded in Donegal field

A cow had to be put down after eating litter that was thrown in the field.

An aluminium can was discarded, and the cow consumed it through the silage during the winter months. The cow then fell ill and the farmer took her to the vet. The cow had to be euthanised due to internal damage caused by the can.

Independent Councillor Michael McClafferty highlighted the incident at the Glenties Municipal District Meeting. This echoed Sinn Féin Councillor Brian Carr’s call for active litter wardens, signage and CCTV following the recent incidents of illegal dumping in Glenties.

The Environmental Department responded that they would request that litter wardens patrol the municipal districts and coordinate with local representatives on the issue.
