Dooey Beach, located near Lettermacaward, featuring 3km of sandy shores
A Sinn Féin councillor has requested that Dooey Beach be made more accessible.
Councillor Brian Carr highlighted that the boardwalk and the car park need to be upgraded at the recent Glenties Municipal District meeting.
Cllr Carr was speaking from personal experience as he had an incident at Tramore beach where he, his wife Marie, their children, Ben, 9, and niece Amelia, 10, had gone for a swim when a strong current suddenly swept them out. Four local boys noticed the emergency and quickly responded, and they were brought safely back to shore.
However, there was trouble directing emergency services to the beach and trouble accessing the beach, and the Malin Head Coast Guard had to be called.
“If the same situation happened to anybody else that happened to me, they would need to be airlifted,” Cllr Carr said.

The councillor previously called for an individual identification number to be assigned to beaches to accurately direct emergency services. Cllr Carr wants emergency access and to be reviewed at all beaches across the county.
