In a thriving example of how education extends beyond the classroom, Finn Valley College is taking bold strides to cultivate leadership skills among its students.

By providing opportunities for young learners to lead teams, take on responsibilities, and build self-confidence, the school is shaping a generation ready to make meaningful contributions to both the school and the broader community.

The school’s leadership initiative is designed to foster a sense of ownership and pride among students. From organising events to leading extracurricular activities, students are encouraged to step forward and develop their abilities to inspire and guide others.

By creating an environment that values and supports student leadership, the school aims to empower its learners to become proactive problem-solvers and role models.

Principal Mr Séan Mc Fadden shared insights into the school’s goals: “We believe that leadership is a skill that every student can develop.

“Our programmes are focused on giving students the tools, lifelong skills and experiences they need to become confident and capable leaders.”

In supporting the student voice in the decision-making processes that guide school policy and procedures, it is essential to have strong voices to advocate on behalf of students.

The student council is an excellent way for students to voice their views on different aspects of school life.

The Student Council meet regularly throughout the year to discuss matters of concern to students and to bring forward new ideas that may help to improve student life and to develop the school.

The Student Council helps to promote a positive school environment which is conducive to educational and personal development. The Student Council work with their liaison teacher Miss Diver. Mr. Mc Fadden meets with the Student Council at least once per term.

In addition to meeting as a group in their own right, representatives of the council also meet with school management. These include the Board of Management and the school’s senior management team.

Another student leadership opportunity relates to the role of Class Leader (Junior Cycle up to Transition Year) and Senior Prefect (5th and 6th Year). Our Class Leaders and Senior Prefects form the Student Leadership Team.

The Student Leadership Team are also members of the School Development Team. Members of the team undertake training in mentoring. They act as Mentors to first years from the initial Induction Programme and throughout their first year at school.  The Student Leadership team also gets involved in helping out at Parent Teacher meetings, student induction days, entrance assessments, visits and presentations to the local primary schools and being positive ambassadors for our school.

The impact of the student leadership is already being felt throughout the school. Student-led teams like the Green School team have taken charge of organising events such as environmental clean-up campaigns and fundraising activities.

Shannon Mc Gee, a member of the Student Leadership Team, reflected on her experience: “An example of our voice being heard was when the school had a suggestion box open to all students. One of the suggestions was to open a music room which was then implemented. The tangible impact of student voice is that we now have a music room that is thriving!”

A cornerstone of student leadership is the belief that responsibility breeds confidence. Students are entrusted with meaningful roles that challenge them to make decisions and be accountable for outcomes. Whether managing school events, mentoring younger students, or leading sports teams, these experiences prepare students for future leadership roles both in and out of school.

Principal Mr Mc Fadden commented that: “When students are given real responsibilities, they rise to the occasion. We see them grow not just as leaders but as individuals who understand the value of teamwork, accountability, and resilience.”

These student leaders are setting an inspiring example for their peers, demonstrating what can be achieved through dedication and initiative.

By taking charge and showing confidence, they are encouraging others to follow in their footsteps and strive for success. The influence of these role models creates a positive cycle where younger students see what’s possible and are motivated to unlock their own leadership potential.

The school believes that every student has the capacity to lead and achieve their full potential.

As the community witnesses the growth of these young leaders, it becomes clear that the school’s vision for leadership is making a lasting impact.

Through empowerment, responsibility, and confidence-building, students are not only learning valuable life skills but also leaving a legacy of positive change. By role modelling for others and inspiring their peers, these student leaders are paving the way for everyone to reach their full potential in education and beyond.
