Buncrana Youth Club
Buncrana Youth and Community Development, the non-profit company which owns and operates Buncrana Youth Club, has lodged plans for a new full size, floodlit AstroTurf soccer pitch at Castle Avenue.
An application from PJ Hallinan on behalf of the youth club was lodged with Donegal County Council earlier this month.
The youth club, which was established back in 1969, is seeking permission to replace the existing grass-based ‘lower’ pitch with synthetic turf and to erect six 15 metre high floodlight pylons.
A 2.4 metre perimeter fence is also to be constructed around the new pitch which will cover around 6,000 square metres.
Last September, Buncrana Youth and Community Development Company Ltd was granted €199,327 from the Government’s community sports facilities fund towards the development of an AstroTurf pitch.
If permission is granted and construction goes ahead, the development will become the first full size soccer AstroTurf pitch in Inishowen.
The Buncrana Youth Club already has a smaller AstroTurf area which was built a quarter of a century ago and at the time was one of the first synthetic playing areas in the peninsula.
Donegal County Council is due to decide on the current application by mid-July.
