Rory Gallagher Avenue was unveiled by An Taoiseach Micheál Martin on the main entrance road to Cork Airport, coinciding with the 30th anniversary of the musician’s death.

Gallagher, who had hits like ‘As The Crow Flies’ rocker was born in Ballyshannon in 1948, but also has links to Cork, where he lived during a large portion of his childhood.

The new road name is part of Cork City Council’s ‘Stompin Ground’ heritage tour, launched in June 2025, and developed in partnership between Cork City Libraries, Cork Public Museum, and the Rory Gallagher estate.

An Taoiseach Micheál Martin said: “It is an immense honour to officially unveil Rory Gallagher Avenue at Cork Airport.

“I want to pay tribute to the Gallagher family and all those at Cork Airport and Cork City Council in bringing about this wonderful initiative in Rory’s memory.”

Dónal Gallagher, Rory’s brother, said the family was honoured by the “heartfelt gesture” of the road name unveiling.

He commented: “This is a wonderful tribute to my brother, with the naming of the Cork Airport thoroughfare Rory Gallagher Avenue, a roadway he traversed throughout his lifetime to engage with his international career.”
