Rory Gallagher named by Johnny Marr as one of his three greatest guitarists
The Smiths’ guitarist, Johnny Marr, named Rory Gallagher as one of the three greatest guitarists he had seen on the Stick to Football podcast.
Whilst appearing on the podcast with former Irish captain Roy Keane, Gary Neville, Ian Wright, and Jill Scott, Marr was asked by Neville to name the three greatest guitarists he had seen in his lifetime.

In response, Marr began his answer with Jimi Hendrix, who had “completely reinvented the electric guitar” before his own career.
He then said of the Ballyshannon-born Gallagher: “There was an Irish guy, Rory Gallagher, who I used to follow around and go to all of his shows. I got to know him before he passed away. He was a beautiful guy, Rory.
“There is a whole long list, but I would say Rory Gallagher, Mark Boland, and Nile Rodgers.”
