A local woman, who scooped the €10,000 jackpot in the Inishowen Credit Union members’ draw, has revealed how she was “in total shock” when she got the call to say she had won.
Isobel Henry, from Burt, who has been a member of the local Credit Union for more than thirty years, jokes that she is now “so famous” since her unexpected triumph.
“I got a phone call after 11 on Saturday, and it was one of the girls from the Credit Union. She was very calm and she just said that I’d won the first prize.”
“Then she said it was 10 grand! I just couldn’t believe it. It was total shock and delight. It was great news and a lovely phone call to get,” smiles Isobel, who has never won anything like this before.
Isobel has been absolutely inundated with well-wishes since her weekend bonanza.
“My phone just lit up when the news started to get around. Everybody, including family and friends, and people at work, have all been congratulating me and wishing me well. It’s great.”
As for her plans for the money? Isobel already has something in mind.
“I’m hoping to do a new patio area in the garden; just somewhere nice to sit in,” she says.
Meanwhile, Isobel was one of 30 lucky prizewinners in all, as the Inishowen Credit Union gave out a total of €53,000, including the top prize of €10,000, a runners-up prize of €5,000, and two prizes of €2,500.
There were also four prizes of €2,000, six prizes of €1,500, and sixteen lucky winners of €1,000 each.
The members’ draw is non-profit and is carried out twice a year; once you are signed up, €10 is deducted from your account the evening before each draw. All money made from the draw (minus any expenses) is paid out in prizes.

A spokesperson for the Credit Union has commended Isobel on her big win.
“Inishowen Credit Union would like to extend our warmest congratulations to Isobel on winning the top prize of €10,000,” they said. “We wish her the very best of luck with her prize and happy spending!”
The spokesperson added: “Thank you to Isobel and to everyone who took the time to enter. Your continued support is greatly appreciated."
