Donegal in top 10 counties of average age of population in country

Latest Central Statistics Office (CSO) figures revealed that Donegal is the joint-ninth highest county or council area in the country for the average age of its population.

The average age of both sexes of the Donegal population in 2023 was 39.4 years, the same as the population of Wexford.

Donegal’s population has been growing older over the years previous to 2023. In  2020, Donegal’s average population age was 38.9 years.

Kerry and Mayo top the list of the oldest average population, at 40.5 years, followed by Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown, Sligo, Leitrim, Roscommon, Clare, and Tipperary. 

The youngest average population in the country was Fingal, followed by Meath and Kildare. All three areas had an average population younger than 37 years of age. 

Women in Donegal were on average older than men in Donegal in 2023. The average age of a woman was 39.8 years, compared to 38.9 years for men.
