Jenson Bonner posing with letter he received from President Higgins' office
A student from St Columba’s Comprehensive School in Glenties was delighted to receive a letter from the Office of President Michael D Higgins.
First-year student, Jenson Bonner sent a letter to President Higgins, inviting him to attend the school’s coffee morning on Thursday, October 23, which is being run to raise funds for the school’s Additional Support Needs rooms.
Speaking to Donegal Live, St Columba’s teacher, Karl Doherty, said: “Jenson himself was delighted. We sent the letter last week to President Higgins for our coffee morning, which is a fundraising event for our ASN Rooms.
“I didn’t think we would get anything back. I know he is a busy man.
“Jenson was absolutely over the moon. As a staff, we were delighted to receive correspondence from the President. It was lovely.”

President Higgins’ secretariat, Luke Sweeney, said that the President thanked Jenson for “kind invitation” and praised Jenson’s “thoughtfulness in extending the invitation,” which was “very much appreciated.”
The letter continued: “The President regrets that, due to the extent of his commitments, it is not possible for him to accept.
“The President wishes you every success with your event and trusts that you will appreciate the reasons for his unavailability on this occasion.”
