Donegal Town hosted an EirGird Energy Citizens Roadshow, allowing members of the community to hear about the future of the electricity grid.

Among those attending the event was Seamus Hopkins, the Senior Engineer and Divisional Manager for the Estates, Climate and Environment Division at Donegal County Council, as he highlighted the local authority’s Climate Action Plan.

Those who attended heard about plans to upgrade the electricity system in Donegal from Jason Kenna, the Head of Network Projects Ireland and EirGrid, as well as information on what home energy upgrade grants are available to citizens from Isabella Donnelly, of SEAI Sustainable Energy Community.

Speaking following the event, Head of Public Engagement with EirGrid, Sinead Dooley, said: “At EirGrid, we want to engage with people, listen to them and get their feedback, while providing an opportunity to access up-to-date and relevant information regarding energy and the future of the electricity grid.

“As we work to ensure eighty percent of Ireland’s electricity comes from renewable sources, as per Government targets, we recognise the importance of bringing communities with us on the journey as we transition to a clean, renewable energy grid.

“EirGrid is playing a central role in Ireland’s efforts to reduce emissions and achieve our climate goals and the attendance and the level of engagement from communities showed the appetite for information surrounding renewable energy.

“We thank all those who attended our Donegal Roadshow, in particular local exhibitors who provided information on solar panels and heat pumps and the local Credit Union with information on finance for energy projects. Decarbonising the electricity grid and facilitation the integration of renewables will also bring economic development and opportunities to the region and EirGrid were delighted to be joined by the Atlantic Technological University Faculty of Engineering who were showcasing a range courses at various levels available in Donegal.”
