Tour guide pleads guilty for driving passengers without appropriate licence

Incident occurred at Killybegs Harbour

A tour guide was fined at Donegal District Court after being convicted of using a car for reward, without holding a licence to drive a small public service vehicle at Killybegs Harbour.

Finn MacAodhain, of Kingarrow, Fintown, County Donegal, pleaded guilty as he was fined €100 plus costs of €300, and was allowed five months to pay by Judge Éiteáin Cunningham at Ballyshannon Courthouse, for the incident which took place on June 18, 2025.

MacAodhain was found contrary to Section 22 (2) (b) of the Taxi Regulation Acts 2013 and 2016, and he committed an offence under Section 22 (4) of the Taxi Regulations Acts 2013 and 2016.

A second charge of using a car for the carriage of persons for reward, with such vehicle not being a small public service vehicle under licensing regulations, was taken into consideration.

Speaking before the court, MacAoidhan stated: “I would like to say that I work as a tour guide during the summer. I generally give walking tours, but on that day, we had a driver, but it fell through, and I made a silly decision - A lack of judgement.”

The solicitor on behalf of the taxi regulator, Jason Teehan, said he conceded that the charge was “in the lower end.”

Judge Cunningham commented that MacAodhain had “cooperated” with the investigation as she gave her verdict.
