Proposed site of new Letterkenny Medical Clinic
Donegal County Council has received a submitted planning application for the development of a new medical clinic in Letterkenny.
The development, to be situated at Lower Main Street, will consist of the change of use of an existing commercial building from a Family Resource Centre to a Medical Clinic with associated signage and all other associated site development works.
Muhammad Karam Arsalan Shahid is the listed applicant for the application, and two doctors, Dr Muhammad Akram and Dr Arsalan Shahid, were named as clients by Michael Friel Architects.
The vacant building in question has not only been used as a Family Resource Centre in the past, but also as a Driver Theory Test Centre.
Euan Doherty, author of the application cover letter, stated: "The building will house up to three Doctors/Consultants who will see patients on an arranged basis by appointment within the building.

“The building is an established commercial building and is intended to be used as a commercial building once again, in an area of the Town which has seen quite a bit of dereliction and vacancy rates in recent years.”
Regarding the work required to convert the vacant building into a medical clinic, Doherty wrote: “The amount of work required to make this building suitable to be used as a medical centre is minimal insofar as the construction of the Building will allow for the current rooms within the building to be used as consultation rooms on the ground and first floors.
“Much of the work which will be carried out will be to make the building more aesthetically pleasing so that a user-friendly, professional, much-needed service can be provided for the population of Letterkenny and wider afield.”
Doherty concluded: “Bringing a building back to life is supported in the Donegal County Development Plan, particularly in Letterkenny.”
A decision due date for the planning application has yet to be set by Donegal County Council.
