Case was heard at Ballyshannon District Court
A retired octogenarian was fined €200 for careless driving at Ballyshannon District Court after a 2023 incident at Ballintra.
Alice Moore, 82, of 2 Station Road, Ballyshannon, was fined €200 with six months to pay, however, Judge Brendan O’ Reilly did not disqualify her from driving.
It was found that on May 13, 2023, at Ballintra, Mrs Moore did drive a vehicle without due care and attention, contrary to Section 52 (1) of the Road Traffic Act, 1961 (as substituted by Section 4 of the Road Traffic (No. 2) Act 2011).
Mrs Moore’s solicitor, Rory O’Brien, told the court: “It was just an accident. It is a dangerous junction as well, and it is fair to say that Mrs Moore has no previous convictions.

“She had an unblemished driving history for over 40 years of driving. Her own vehicle was a relatively new vehicle.
“My client is now retired some nine years ago, after having a very distinguished career, involved in a wide variety of jobs.
“This was an incident that was just a very simple road accident. Her insurance was in play.”
Judge O'Reilly commented: “This is an accident that could happen to anybody. I am familiar with that junction.”
