Donegal Libraries Launch New Communication Boards to Support Inclusive Access

Donegal County Library Service has officially launched a new initiative featuring Communication Boards across its branches, marking a significant step forward in improving accessibility and inclusion for all library users.

Thirteen large Communication Boards have now been installed in all libraries county-wide, accompanied by A4 take-home versions designed to support non-verbal communication, early language development, and allow easier communication with staff and others in the library.

Funded by the Local Community Development Committee and delivered in partnership with Finding Charlie’s Voice, the initiative ensures that children, young people, and adults with communication support needs - including those who are non-verbal, autistic, or experiencing speech and language difficulties - can fully engage in library life, participate in events, and access services with greater independence and confidence.

The Communication Boards feature simple visuals and symbols, with text in both English and Irish, allowing users to express needs, ask questions, and interact with staff without relying solely on verbal communication.

Speaking about the boards, County Librarian Maureen Kerr said: “Our goal is always to ensure that everyone who comes through our doors feels supported and able to take part in library life in the way that suits them best. 

“This project forms part of Donegal Libraries’ ongoing commitment to creating welcoming, supportive community spaces that empower people to learn, connect, and thrive. These Communication Boards are a simple but powerful step in helping more people easily communicate within our libraries and we’re proud to bring this resource to branches across the county.”

The Communication Boards are now available in all branches, and we encourage the public to call in, explore them, and discover the wider range of inclusive supports available across Donegal Libraries – including Social Stories, sensory toys, Tovertafel interactive tables, C-Pens, noise-reducing headphones, accessible reading formats such as large print and audiobooks, height-adjustable desks, and sensory-friendly events designed to make our libraries welcoming for everyone. Library membership is completely free, and overdue fines no longer apply, ensuring that all members of the community can enjoy our services without barriers.
