Exit polls show drop in support for Fine Gael and Labour

Two national exit polls indicate that the coalition partners are likely to fall short of a majority.

RTÉ published its poll this morning, which shows Fine Gael at 24.8% (-36.1% from 2011) and Labour at 7.1% (down from 19.5%).

This is in line with the Irish Times poll figures, released last night, which put Fine Gael at 26.1% and Labour at 7.8%.

If these figures prove to be born out by the actual count results, the combined Fine Gael and Labour vote will have fallen from 55.6% in 2011 to 31.9%.

As predicted, Fianna Fáil's vote looks to be up, according to RTÉ at 21.1% (+4%), and The Irish Times at 22.9%.

Sinn Féin also looks to have made significant gains, from 10% to 16% (RTÉ) or 14.9% (Irish Times).

The rest of the exit poll results are as follows.

RTÉ: Independents 11%, Alliance Against Austerity/People Before Profit 4.7%, Social Democrats 3.7%, Green Party 3.6%, Renua 2.4% and Others 2.6%

Irish Times: Independents/Others 16.1%, Alliance Against Austerity/People Before Profit 3.6%, Social Democrats 2.8%, Green Party 3.5% amd Renua 2.3%

Turnout is estimated at between 60 and 65%, down from 70% in 2011.

RTÉ quizzed 4,283 voters at 225 polling stations across all 40 constituents and puts the margin of error at 1.5%

The Irish Times exit poll was condited by Ipsos MRBI, with 5,260 voters at polling stations taking part.
