Donegal Schools Anthem launched

The Donegal Schools Anthem 2016, created by Donegal post-primary students, was launched in Café Blend in Letterkenny.

The brainchild of Donna Harkin, in collaboration with Jacqui Dillon, director of the County Donegal Education Centre, the anthem has been developed over the past year as part of the Donegal Anthems project.

The anthem, “This Beautiful Place”, was written, composed, performed and recorded by Donegal students under Donna’s direction, and celebrates the county through the eyes of its youth.

"We’re creating a new tradition of inclusion here through music – one that is vibrant, joyful, freeing and connected, that is rooted in community and builds quality and confidence from the inside out, for the future,” Donna said.

She said, "There is a wealth of sustainable power that comes from the experience of music, and it’s a relationship that lasts a lifetime."

Inspired by the celebration of the birth of the nation, and with some of Donegal’s most talented young musicians - Paul MacKinnon, Lee Russell, Leah Foley, Michael Grant, Pamela Collins, Mary Doherty and Chantel Collins - the song illustrates the county’s musical tradition and the wealth of talent in Donegal schools, organisers said.

“The schools anthem reflects, celebrates and commemorates the last 100 years in Donegal, and through the young students' own words and musical creativity under Donna's guidance, a light is shone on the culture, history and depth of talent within County Donegal," Jacqui said.

The anthem will be available for download from
