One more day to have your say on Local Property Tax

Tomorrow, Friday 19th, is the deadline for submissions from members of the public to have their say on varying the rate of Local Property Tax in Donegal in 2017.

Submissions from the public should be made in writing and emailed to LPT@donegalcoco.ie

Local Property Tax is charged annually on all residential properties in Ireland. Local authorities may vary the basic rate of Local Property Tax within its own area by a maximum of 15%.

Donegal County Council can increase or decrease the rate of Local Property Tax in Donegal in 2017 by a maximum of 15% of the 2016 rate. For example, if a house is valued under €100,000, the Local Property Tax in 2016 would have been €90.

If the Local Property Tax rate is increased by 15%, the above house owner will pay €103.50 in 2017. If the Local Property Tax rate is reduced by 15%, this house owner will pay €76.50 in 2017.

The money collected under the Local Property Tax contributes towards the cost of local Council services including libraries, public lighting, road maintenance, housing services, fire services, dealing with illegal dumping and littering, community initiatives, beach management and tourism development initiatives.

An adjustment in the rate of Local Property Tax will have an impact on the Council’s capacity to deliver these services.

Feedback from the public will be considered by the elected members of Donegal County Council as part of the decision making process at a meeting in late September 2016 when a final decision will be made on varying the rate of Local Property Tax in Donegal.
