St Eunan's footballers return as pitch reopens

The Rannafast Cup winners from 1955

Generations of St. Eunan’s College athletes gathered at the Letterkenny secondary school this afternoon for the blessing and reopening of the college’s refurbished pitch.

Guests of honour included members of the St. Eunan’s 1955 Rannafast Cup-winning team and the school’s 1956 team, which brought St. Eunan’s to the finals of the MacRory Cup, the Ulster Colleges Senior Football championship.

Canon Austin Laverty, who went on to become the ninth president of St. Eunan’s, captained the team that brought home the Rannafast Cup. He recalled being carried on people’s shoulders from the Port Road to the college.

“We were the very first team that brought the cup into this establishment,” Canon Laverty said at a reception earlier today, Thursday, in the office of St. Eunan’s Principal, Chris Darby.

Bishop Philip Boyce, bishop of Raphoe, officiated at the ceremony, which marked the end of an 18-month, €150,000 refurbishment of the pitch, the most extensive since the field was installed in 1992.

The day’s events also included an exhibition match on the refurbished pitch between Letterkenny Institute of Technology and St. Eunan’s senior team.

The work on the pitch, involving drainage and complete reseeding, was funded by the Diocese of Raphoe and fundraisers organised by the school’s Parents Association.
