Inishowen Municipal District has the highest number of people awaiting council housing, council figures show.
Figures raised at the October meeting of the Inishowen Municipal District show Inishowen topping the list, with a net need of 411 houses; followed by Letterkenny with 358; Stranorlar, 201; Donegal, 162; and Glenties, 141.
The county-wide list has dropped from 1,700 last year to 1,275 this year, councillors heard.
Fianna Fáil Cllr. Rena Donaghey said Inishowen has more than a quarter of the county population and road network. “Inishowen is a big area,” she said, adding, “So I’m not surprised that’s what the numbers are.”
She also noted that councill has not been allowed to build or buy houses in the past five years. “It’s gotten out of hand,” she said.
Sinn Féin Cllr. Jack Murray welcomed council plans to build or buy 36 houses in Buncrana in the future but said, “We’re going in the right direction but we’ve got a long journey to go.”
