Letterkenny in shock at death of popular figure

The late Jimmy Doherty

There was deep shock in Letterkenny at the weekend as news emerged of the sad passing of one of the town’s most popular and respected figures.

Jimmy Doherty (52), of Woodlands in Letterkenny, passed away on Saturday last in Beaumont Hospital after an accident in his own home which resulted in him being left in a coma.

A former student of both St. Eunan’s College and LYIT, Jimmy’s passing has shocked many of his friends. The Letterkenny man worked with the Water Department in Donegal Co. Council and was regarded as an expert in his field.

Former Mayor of Donegal Cllr. Ciaran Brogan told the Democrat: “I am still coming to terms with Jimmy’s passing - he was a very close personal friend, not only to me but to everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.

“Jimmy worked in the Water Department with Donegal Co. Council and was an expert in his field. He was one of the most knowledgeable people in water conservation and in the IT area.

“It is a sad time for Letterkenny.”

The late Mr. Doherty's remains are reposing at his home at his late residence. He will be laid to rest on Wednesday afternoon at Conwal Cemetery following 12 noon Requiem Mass at St Eunan's Cathedral.
