Richard Thornton . . . the new Donegal coach/trainer
Donegal footballers will have a new coach when they return to training following confirmation of Tyrone man Richard Thornton as the new coach/trainer.
Thornton, an All-Ireland U-21 winner with the Red Hand County, also played senior football with Tyrone. He replaces Jack Cooney from Westmeath who completed two seasons in the job.
From Coalisland, Thornton lives in Killyclogher, outside Omagh, and has managed and coached his own club seniors for a numbers of years.
He is also a former joint Tyrone Vocational Schools manager along with current Derry coach and number two, Brian McGuckin.
His most recent coaching job was this season was with beaten Derry senior finalists, Loup.
This is his first time to work with a senior county team. He is a second level teacher at St Joseph’s College in Coalisland and is a former star underage forward with Tyrone. He played one season with Tyrone seniors, before injury cut his county career short.
