The Emergency Department at Letterkenny University Hospital
The emergency departments at both Letterkenny and Sligo University Hospitals continue to be under severe pressure today, with a total of 52 patients awaiting beds this morning.
According to figures released by the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation's Trolley Watch, there were 23 patients awaiting beds in Letterkenny, 9 on trolleys and 14 in wards, while there were 29 in Sligo, 27 on trolleys and 2 on wards.
A spokesperson for Saolta University Hospital Group said there has been "an increase in the acuity of patients presenting", especially in Sligo. "In addition," she continued, "patient numbers tend to go up at this time of year".
The public are reminded not to attend hospital emergency departments "unless it is a genuine emergency" and to go to their GP in the first instance.
