Plans have emerged today for a new Northern Ireland border checkpoint at Belleek on the Donegal/Fermanagh border.
As Brexit moves continue, the plans are the first tangible signs that UK authorities believe a hard border is inevitable and that authorities in the UK are planning for such checkpoints.
Drawings, dated April 1st, 2020, for a 6,000m square checkpoint labelled with the word "Belleek" were emailed in error to a contractor and have since been seen by the Democrat.
The plans are impressive in terms of accommodation for the users and include provision for four stand alone storage units, a secure 'holding car park' with 20 metre high fencing, a Playstation games room with 80 inch surround sound television, a jacuzzi, a mini-gym, a contemplation room, a toilet block and a large kitchen/dining area. The plans also include three 20x20 cells and three interview rooms with provision for closed circuit television cameras.
