It is expected that Councillor Frank McBrearty will be added to the Fine Gael election ticket in the Stranorlar area.
The decision is imminent.
Sitting Councillor Martin Harley told the Democrat earlier this week that he would “consider his position” if McBrearty were added to the party ticket, citing the fact that neither he or his running mate Garvan Connolly, or indeed local members of the party had been informed.
A meeting was held in Fine Gael on Wednesday night.
Earlier today, Minister Joe McHugh confirmed that Cllr. McBrearty had in fact applied to join Fine Gael and that this was being considered.
Speaking on Highland Radio, this morning, Minister McHugh said that he would have no problem with Cllr. McBrearty on the ticket saying that he was a “hardworking councillor in his area” He added that the national executive of the party were taking on board the feelings expressed by the grassroots and would be making an informed decision on that basis.
However, a senior source within the party said Cllr McBrearty's application to join the party was successful and that confirmation of his addition to the party ticket was imminent.
