Speed limit set to be reduced along one of Donegal's most dangerous roads

New 60km/p speed limit set to be introduced at Quigley's Point

The speed limit at Quigley's Point is set to be reduced to 60km/p from 100km/p.

One of Donegal's most dangerous roads is set to see its speed limit reduced.

Local businesses, stakeholders and residents of Quigley's Point have come together and agreed the speed limit at the junction at the Point Inn should be reduced from 100km/p to 60km/p.

This particular stretch of the main Muff to Moville road has seen more than its fair share of tragedy in recent years.

The consensus to reduce the speed at the R238 junction comes ahead of the closing of a countywide review of speed limits, which closes this Friday at 5pm.

Welcoming the development, Cllr Terry Crossan said he was in full support of the communities decision after he alerted locals of the ongoing review.

“100km/p is far too fast for this stretch of road,” he said. “That area of Quigley's Point is busy with the Point Lodge housing Ukrainian refugees, McCarron's Shop, the car showroom and the caravan site, it makes sense to reduce the speed at this part of the road.

“It'll also make it easier for motorists who are turning right towards Muff from the junction to get on the road without fear of causing a crash.

“So I'm in full support of the community's decision to reduce the limit to 60km/p.

“The review is still ongoing until Friday but ultimately it will come down to local councillors and having spoken to most of them, I'm sure they will vote to reduce the limit.”
