Guineas weekend at The Curragh began in memorable fashion for a trio of Donegal men.

Ballyare jockey Patrick McGettigan earned his first winner at headquarters while Rathmullan rider Luke McAteer saddled up to give Letterkenny’s Paul Sweeney his first win as a trainer.

McGettigan guided the 6/1 shot Brigid’s Cloak, trained by Johnny Murtagh, to victory in the Cavalor Equine Nutrition Irish EBF Fillies Handicap.

McGettigan led three furlongs from home and pushed on to win well from Back Down Under, a 14/1 chance.

A 7lb claimer, McGettigan had over four lengths to spare. Last weekend, he was aboard Summer Snow (10/1) for a win at Leopardstown.

In the Ryans Cleaning Handicap, McAteer was victorious aboard Ransom.

Priced at 20/1, Ransom was taken to victory by over a length from Anvika (28/1).

Sweeney toasted a first success and said: “You couldn’t ask for any more on Guineas weekend. That’s what it’s all about.”
