Dylan Browne McMonagle with trainer Willie Mullins
Dylan Browne McMonagle gave legendary trainer Willie Mullins one of the best moments of his career with victory in the Longines Breeders Cup Turf on Saturday night.
The recently-crowned champion jockey Browne McMonagle powered home on Ethical Diamond, Mullins’ 25/1 shot.
The Letterkenny man rode wide on Ethical Diamond and blasted past Minnie Hauk and Rebel’s Romance to take a famous win at Del Mar in California.
Mullins has conquered jumps racing, but this win, his first at the Breeders Cup, goes right up in his achievements.
"This might come second best to winning the Grand National with my son Patrick on board. I couldn't believe it," beamed Mullins.
I looked at where he was and the speed he was going and I said, ‘this is going to be on’.”
Mullins’ greatest success on the flat seemed unlikely with a wide draw but Browne McMonagle drove Ethical Diamond - who has competed seven of 15 times over hurdles - on as the five-year-old claimed the $5 million contest in a course-record time.

“He’s something else,” said Browne McMonagle. “Willie was expecting him to run a nice race and to be placed would have been huge, but I was quietly confident beforehand.
“This is unbelievable, it doesn’t get much better than this. To have a few rides here is huge, but to win one of the big races is massive."
