The late Dessie, from Bruckless, will be remembered as a man with a massive heart by everyone in south-west Donegal and furthere afield
Long before modern corporations invented algorithms for home delivery, there was Dessie Gallagher - Bruckless.
To the corporate world, “Click & Collect” is a modern logistics puzzle. To our community (Bruckless, Castlereagh, Dunkineely, St. John’s Point, Killaghtee, Calhame, Castletown, Croagh, Corkermore, Ballywoges, Multins, Tullintain, Meentinadea, Loughmult and Gilbertstown), it was simply a man, a shop, a van and a massive heart.
From the 1950s and spanning the next six or seven decades, Dessie was our pioneer. He inherited his father’s grocery business and transformed it into a lifeline, travelling near and far, often in treacherous weather conditions, year-round, ensuring no one was left isolated.
No one was left without the necessities. Even during the night, no call went unanswered, and many people were extremely grateful for the help rendered - ambulances with patients, husbands with wives in labour, needing their tanks filled. If, on a morning, he had to deliver tragic news, he shared every ounce of the recipient's grief.
To know Dessie was to know a man of boundless energy and unparalleled humility. I will always remember helping him load his van at night when I was in my early teens. He would return home late, exhausted and hungry. Yet, the moment he finished eating, he would be right back out there, loading the van again for the next day. There was never a complaint, only a warm smile and immense gratitude for the small helping hand of a teenager. He never placed himself above anyone else; he was a truly humble soul who walked gently through this world, never ever wanting to offend.
Dessie’s service to our community went far beyond the grocery counter. Generous with both his time and his money, he served on countless committees and helped out in every way imaginable.
He thought nothing of driving miles, even from Dublin, to bring home a neighbour or to bring someone to or from hospital. When grief struck a family, Dessie didn’t just send his condolences - he travelled to the wakes and funerals. Remarkably, he was the man who would sit through the long, dark nights with grieving relatives, keeping them company, often until the morning light, so they never had to face their sorrow alone.
Yet for all his hard work, Dessie knew how to celebrate life. He possessed a profound love for the sea, for driving and a deep passion for dancing. Even on the dancehall floor, his legendary kindness shone through. He made it his mission to ensure that any woman - especially a widow - would never be left sitting alone on the sidelines for too long. He brought them to their feet, spinning joy back into their lives just as he did on his daily delivery routes.
Above all else, Dessie was a family man. He absolutely adored his wife, Bernie, and together they raised six wonderful children: Brendan, Pauric, Sinead, Claire, Nuala and Rory. Dessie carried his own heavy crosses in life, including the loss of his parents and siblings, but his greatest, most devastating sadness came in 2023 when his eldest son, Brendan, was taken from them by cancer. He was absolutely heartbroken, and our entire community felt the weight of his profound pain. He carried that quiet sorrow with him, and there is no doubt he spent his remaining years longing for the day he would see his boy again.
Dessie Gallagher did it all. He kept us fed, he kept us connected, he comforted us in our darkest hours, and he danced with us in our brightest. The roads felt terribly empty without him, but the map of his kindness is permanently etched into the heart of this community. Our deepest condolences go to Bernie, Pauric, Sinead, Claire, Nuala, Rory, his sisters Eithne and Ita, his 12 grandchildren, his most precious great grandson Finn and his extended family. We take comfort in knowing that Dessie’s long journey is over, and he is finally reunited with his beloved Brendan. Rest In Peace, Dessie. KMcC - A lifelong friend
