The funeral of Martin McCallion from Buncrana, who died in a tragic workplace accident last week, will take place this Thursday

It is understood that Mr McCallion, who was aged in his early 60s, passed away after sustaining fatal injuries in an incident that occurred at a haulage transportation company in Umricam on Thursday evening.

Emergency services were called to the scene, and the injured man was transferred to Letterkenny University Hospital (LUH) by ambulance. However, the beloved husband, father, and grandfather passed away from his injuries on Saturday morning.

His funeral will take place at St. Mary’s Church, Cockhill, on Thursday morning, a week to the day since the tragic incident occurred.

A funeral post stated that Martin, a beloved husband, is survived by his wife Martina, much-loved father of Joanne (Shane), Christopher (Roberta), Jennifer (Anthony), and Mark, his parents Anna and Barney, his brothers Enda, Gareth, Patrick, and Brian, and his grandchildren.

Buncrana Golf Club led tributes to Martin, who was a much-loved and long-standing member of the club.

A spokesperson said: “The heartbreaking news was greeted with complete utter shock and disbelief around the club over the weekend of the totally unexpected and untimely passing of our dear friend and golfing colleague Martin McCallion.”

“Martin was a loyal and dedicated member of Buncrana Golf Club for many years, along with his son Christopher.”

“Martin will be fondly remembered not only for his deep commitment but also for his warm friendship, kindness, and the positive spirit he brought to every occasion. His sudden passing is a great loss to our club and community, and he will be sorely missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.”

“The Buncrana Golf Club committee and members extend our heartfelt sympathies and deepest condolences to the McCallion family, friends, and colleagues at this very difficult time – May he rest in peace.”

The golf club’s Captains’ Prizes were postponed last weekend due to the sudden death of Martin until a future date. As a mark of respect to “our valued club member Martin McCallion (RIP) the club will be doing a Guard of Honour” at his funeral on Thursday morning,] Buncrana Golf Club has announced.

All Past Captains and Presidents of the Club are asked to be in attendance if at all possible and to wear their club blazers.

Any Members wishing to form part of the guard of honour should wear a Club Logo Jumper or Top.

The golfing club will assemble at 10.20am at St. Mary's Church entrance, in advance of the funeral arriving.

South Inishowen Councillors Jack Murray, Fionán Bradley, and Joy Beard have expressed their sadness at the tragic death of Mr McCallion.

Sinn Féin councillor Jack Murray said the “whole town was just shocked and very saddened by the tragedy of a man who's so well-gotten and so well-known in the town.”

“Everybody's thoughts are with the McCallion family, and we'll rally to support them and give them the support they need  over the coming days and weeks and further on.”

Fianna Fáil Councillor Fionán Bradley expressed his condolences to Martin’s family on his untimely passing, which he described as another dark day for Inishowen.

“Unfortunately, it's a case of Inishowen being struck by another terrible family tragedy. Our thoughts are with his family, his friends, and all those who knew him at this time.”

100% Redress Councillor Joy Beard echoed the sentiments of her fellow Buncrana councillors by stating that she didn't know Martin personally, but “from the tributes that I see and from talking to locals, you know, Martin was obviously very well thought of and very much regarded in the community. My thoughts are obviously with all his family, his friends, and everyone who knew him at this sad time.”

“Hopefully, Martin's family will see the support from the people in Inishowen and see that we're here to support them through this tragedy in whatever way we can.”
