Donegal County Council has announced plans to take in charge 12 housing estates across the county.
The move will see estate roads formally declared public, allowing the Council to assume responsibility for the long-term maintenance of roads, footpaths and street lights and water services.
Among the estates included are several in Inishowen, notably Allendale, Heather Park, Straboe and Ard an Dhun in Buncrana, and Manor Court in Moville, as well as estates from Letterkenny to Killygordon to Glencolmcille.
This marks a significant step forward for residents in these areas, many of whom have waited years for their estates to be officially taken over by the local authority.
The taking-in-charge process ensures that key infrastructure - such as roads, footpaths, and public lighting - meets Council standards before being maintained as public assets. Once completed, residents will no longer be reliant on developers or management companies for essential services like road repairs or street lighting maintenance.
A public notice outlining details of the plan has been published in the local press. Maps showing the proposed estate roads are available to view on the Donegal County Council website, or at public service centres between 9am and 4.30pm on weekdays. Members of the public can make objections or submissions in writing to the Planning Authority, Estate Take Over Section, Neil T. Blaney Road, Letterkenny, before 26 November.
